The text of this Advent hymn stems from the 4th century. John Mason Neal (1818-1866) made the English translation "Come, Thou Redeemer of the earth" for "Hymnal Noted" (Novello, Ewer and Co., 1851), which can be sung to the original melody, albeit in that book a different melody was underlaid.
The multi part setting can be sung alternating with stanzas sung to the monophone Gregorian chant.
